Heart Health in Student Athletes: Dr. Michael Turner Points Out Important Signs

Heart issues in children and teens are uncommon—but when they do occur, they can be serious. That’s why Dr. Michael Turner, cardiologist with Imperial Health–Cardiovascular Specialists, encourages parents, coaches, and school staff to know the signs that may point to a potential problem.

“Symptoms like unusual shortness of breath or a racing heartbeat—especially when a student is at rest—could indicate an underlying cardiac concern,” says Dr. Turner. “These are not symptoms to dismiss.”

Routine screenings aren’t typically recommended for all students, but evaluation is essential when symptoms are present. In addition to awareness, Dr. Turner emphasizes the importance of readiness—particularly knowing where Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are located and how to use them.

His son, Kyle Turner, an EKG technician who grew up around both sports and cardiology, learned CPR early in life and now shares his father’s passion for preparedness. “Recognizing a problem and acting quickly can make all the difference,” he says.

At Imperial Health–Cardiovascular Specialists, we believe heart care begins with education and prevention. If you have concerns about your child’s heart health, we’re here to help.
